What is PBIS?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports is the framework Vaughn Elementary utilizes to provide behavior support to all students, school-wide, within every school environment. The practices and systems establish a foundation of regular, positive, and proactive support while preventing unwanted behaviors. 

The core principles guiding positive behavior supports include the understanding that we can and should: 

• Effectively teach appropriate behavior to all children

• Intervene early before unwanted behaviors escalate

• Use research-based interventions whenever possible

• Monitor student progress

• Use data to make decisions

At Vaughn, we accomplish these goals by:

1. Teaching students the behaviors that allow them to successfully participate in all settings: Hallway, cafeteria, classroom, playground, etc. Like content and skills needed to master curriculum standards, we often need to teach, reteach, and provide students with multiple opportunities to practice.

2. Frequently providing specific behavior-focused feedback. We recognize when students are meeting the behavior expectations.

3. Intervening when students need more support to be successful.
